Most of the Record Office's catalogues are on-line, comprising nearly 360,000 entries. Among these are:

Parish records - registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, and other records for parishes in West Sussex from 1538. Also the official records of the Bishops of Chichester, and the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral.

Nonconformist records - including Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian.

Family and estate records - archives of the Goodwood, Cowdray, Parham, Petworth, Standen, Wiston and other smaller estates include title deeds, manorial records, accounts and administrative documents.

Records of private individuals and organisations - Personal collections, such as those of Richard Cobden, Walter Hussey and L J Maxse, which are of national importance, and many other smaller private collections. Society and group archives include Women's Institutes.

Local government records - including those of West Sussex County Council and District Councils, Poor Law administration, and the West Sussex Constabulary. Quarter and Petty Sessions records include plans of road, railway and canal schemes. Manorial and tithe records give detailed local information.

Royal Sussex Regiment - records of the regiment and its predecessors since 1701.

Hospital records - including for the former county asylum in Chichester, which opened in 1897.

School records - including logbooks and admission registers.

Deeds - for land and property transactions dating from 780.

Sale particulars - for properties across the county.

Books - books and pamphlets in the Record Office library.

Maps - Ordnance Survey maps; tithe maps; estate maps from the late 16th century; 19th century enclosure maps.

Prints, drawings and photographs - over 50,000 from the 18th century onwards.

Miscellaneous records - including land drainage, harbour records and inland navigation.
