Full description | Exterior view of Piper's Southwater Forge (built c1850) and a wheelwright's shop with a wagon outside for repair. ROBERT PIPER (1839-1934) with white beard on the left is owner of blacksmiths and wheelwrights. Three other men next to him, from the left, are WILLIAM PIPER (1886-1968), Robert's son, farrier and member of Sussex Yeomanry; JOHN PIPER (1881-1965) blacksmith and wheelwrights, cremated in Worth; and BILL EAMES an employed blacksmith. Building on the left is the Joiners Shop where coffins and wheels were made, the middle building is the blacksmiths shop (dismantled and re-erected at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Singleton, West Sussex, in 1970), and the building on the right is the wagon making shed (demolished in c1928). To the right of this (out of the picture) was the Paint Shop for varnishing and pitching coffins. Working tools are now in the museum. Tile roofing and weatherboard walls. |
