| Full description | Paddockhurst firemen on their horse drawn cart named 'Kitchener', Turners Hill. The cart, made by Merryweather of London, has a water pump on the back. The firemen are standing on the cart in their uniforms and shiny helmets. They are in front of a brick building with a tiled roof and timber framed extension, now known as Worth Abbey School. The fireman standing third from left with a should braid and moustache is Captain John Richardson 1864-1942 who was in charge of Paddockhurst fire brigade throughout its entire existence from 1890 to 1932, then took over command of Turners hill Fire Brigade upon its formation. |
