Short titleHanover Gardens, Arundel Castle
Full descriptionHanover Gardens, Arundel Castle. Two gardeners stand near the fountain in the centre of a formal garden laid out with paths, low box hedges, shrubs and flowers.
This is one of two images forming a stereoscopic photograph. Stereoscopic cameras came into fashion in the UK after being displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851, when Queen Victoria ordered her own viewers and pictures. The technique, then in its infancy, involved taking two simultaneous exposures of the same image, which when viewed together using a stereoscopic viewer appeared in 3D. The 3D effect was most successful if the image had a strong feature in the foreground and a full range of features from mid-ground backwards.
