Full descriptionOpening of waterworks, Fontwell. Directors of the Water Company and other officials pose for a photograph at the opening of the waterworks at Fontwell. Wells at two earlier sites in Bognor and South Bersted were exhausted or became tainted with sea-water, so a well to provide water to Bognor was established further inland. Most of the men have side-whiskers, moustaches or beards and wear or hold hats. Standing L-R: Mr. Neal, unnamed foreman of contractors, Mr. Dockwra (contractor), unidentified, Alfred Adlington (turncock), Charles Humphrey (workman). Seated L-R: Mr. Burgess, Mr. Tait, Rev. A. Conder, Lord Field, Captain Hills, Arthur Smith (architect), unidentified, Ed. Brown (company engineer).
