Short title | St Peter Church, Slinfold |
Full description | St Peter Church, Slinfold. Designed by Benjamin Ferrey and built in 1861. Stone structure with clock tower and broach spire. The spire became unsafe and was replaced by a tower in 1969-70. The building on the right is the village hall built in 1881 in memory of Thomas and Caroline Child, coal and timber merchants and landowners. See Sussex County Magazine article1932. The unusual street light or lamppost, centre right, may be one of the unusual White Whittle gas-oil lamps or gas oil lamps introduced in 1886. See Diana Chatwin's book Slinfold Street (Slinfold Society, 2000) p.23. Postmarked 28 July 1907. Postcard sent to Mrs Booker, East Preston, from her uncle. Hand coloured postcard. |
