This is one of two images forming a stereoscopic photograph. Stereoscopic cameras came into fashion in the UK after being displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851, when Queen Victoria ordered her own viewers and pictures. The technique, then in its infancy, involved taking two simultaneous exposures of the same image, which when viewed together using a stereoscopic viewer appeared in 3D. The 3D effect was most successful if the image had a strong feature in the foreground and a full range of features from mid-ground backwards. The WSPP database includes 13 photographs of Lancing and Shoreham made by Robert Wright of Lancing Grammar School in the late 1850s.
