Full descriptionBury Village ferry over the River Arun. Ferry in foreground with Bury village in background across the river. Buildings include the Church of St John the Evangelist with spire, houses, and farm buildings. Mrs Ada Marshall, wearing a long skirt, apron and straw hat, wields the punting pole. Her mother Jane Shepherd, who was ferrywoman until the early 1900s, sits in the boat wearing a hat and apron and with a shopping basket. The ferry continued to operate until the mid-1950s.
